Interview

For those of you who aren't in tune with the label side of rap music, Lenny Santiago is the Senior Vice President of Roc-Nation. Santiago did an interview with rap-up.com yesterday, and he dished on the slew of releases Roc-Nation has lined up for 2016. Among the names he discussed was Vic Mensa, who's debut project is long since overdue. Here's the snippet from his interview:

Be excited about Fabolous and Jadakiss and what they've been talking about for months, this Freddy Vs. Jason thing. Be excited about Justine Skye coming. Be excited about more Khaled stuff coming. He's about to release a book and is focused on film and television next year. Be excited about, shit, maybe Jay will get the bug to do music again. Who knows? Obviously, nothing confirmed, but some of the verses he's put out — he did the Pusha T thing ['Drug Dealers Anonymous'], he did the Fat Joe thing ['All the Way Up'], he did the Khaled thing ['I Got the Keys] — it's exciting. Be excited about Vic Mensa. Vic Mensa's serious, man. He's taking time with this album. He's like 80 percent-90 percent done. We're about to come soon…It's gonna be great…There's a couple things coming down the pipeline that I'm real excited about.

In a rare moment of objectivity, I will be the first to admit that Vic Mensa is not among the upper echelon rap names signed to Roc-Nation, which is what makes such strong praise from a music mogul like Santiago so unusual and rewarding.

Instrumental Snippet

The mixing and recording process for Mensa's untitled debut was handled by 1500 or Nothin'. Now, if you don't follow the nuances of recording, you should know that 1500 or Nothin' isn't just a collection of nobodies, this ensemble houses some of the best producers, engineers, and writers in the industry. 1500 or Nothin' worked with Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, T.I., and many more industry heavy-hitters. While Roc-Nation does have a good relationship with 1500 or Nothin', it's a good sign that Vic has been recording with an official crew. Last time, recording was handled primarily by Vic, Papi Beatz, Smoko Ono, and Knox Fortune. An instrumental from Vic's album was used to create a promotional video for 1500 or Nothin'.

Heavy rock influence to that instrumental, which has me thinking that this could possibly be a snippet from "Rage".

Where to next?

Vic has a performance tonight at the Shay Nightclub after the St. Pablo Tour, and I've heard we might be getting an opportunity to hear new music at this performance. I'd be really surprised if anything substantive came from this concert because a) people aren't as apt to record a new song in a nightclub, and b) it's not the best venue to build up hype.

Feature

A production based artist dropped a new song, and Vic was the lyricist. Vic was not credited with a feature tag, and the song isn't going to wow you vocally. It's a banger though, take a listen.

Drop Date

Boy I don't know shit about when he's dropping I'd blab in an instant if I knew his drop date. But right now, the expectation I have from everything I've heard in conversation with people who are in-tune to the Chicago scene and everything I've read leads me to think that late October-mid November is when we see the album.
