The Nook in the Stream

December 20th, 2001. The city of Buenos Aires. A decade of unbridled financial speculation has dramatically come to an end. The nook in the stream follows the stories of three characters on that historic day through a documentary film script. Meanwhile, four individuals experience the end of the Argentine Menem years from the perspective of unlimited and accelerated nightlife. As a result, worlds collide through economic crisis. LANGUAGE-AS-VICTORY: A STUDY OF GAMING LITERACY PRACTICES IN SECOND-LANGUAGE CONTEXTS

This paper reports the findings of a two-year study on how English is present as part of the language ecologies of Medellín, Colombia. Drawing from an ethnographic approach, the research team walked the city, using a series of routes (advertising, restaurants, malls/bookshops/libraries) and collecting images and interviews as data sources. Our findings keep showing that people have turned English (and other languages) as valuable communicative resources where commentary, transgression, and creativity are the norm. We have learned that English and other second languages are not interfering...

Our Brains Are Wired for Morality: Evolution, Development, and Neuroscience

Psychological and neuroscience research both tell us that morality, our mental ability to tell right from wrong in our behaviors and the behaviors of others, is a product of evolution. "Building blocks" of morality, such as sensing fairness, experiencing empathy, and judging others' harmful and helpful actions, can be observed in infancy, before a child's social environment would be able to have a strong influence....
