How To Contribute To The Editorial Site

You were notified of this post because it mentioned forums you follow. You must follow the discussion to get notified of future posts.

We first launched the editorial site in January and as most of you have seen, we've had a bunch of great contributions from the community—we want to keep that going and in the process, clearly explain to everyone the best way to get your idea flipped into an article.

What To Pitch

We're trying to standout from the general content rat race—we're not looking to be first but instead are focusing more on highlighting music knowledge—through what we find in annotations from community members, artists, producers, etc. or digging through aggregated content (interviews, essays, longform pieces on sites that aren't Genius).

Here's some examples:

How To Pitch

Send all pitches to editorial@genius.com

Your email should include an informative subject line that tells us what kind of article you're pitching, your intended article headline, and a succinct thesis statement that tells us your angle on what you're writing about. Your thesis statement should be no longer than 2-3 sentences. If you think a particular annotation has the makings of a news post, just send us the annotation!

Here's an example thesis (click here for a template):

To: editorial@genius.com
Subject: [News] Kid Cudi said "Welcome to Heartbreak" was originally a Jay Z Song
Body:

Hey ed team!

Cudi just appeared on Pharrell's OTHERtone Apple Music radio show and said Kanye's "Welcome To Heartbreak" was originally a Jay Z song. He sung different lyrics to Kanye's song but with the same melody. I'd like to flip a short piece highlighting this bit of knowledge and add some more context around the making of 808's & Heartbreak.

This piece is pretty time sensitive. What do you think/when would you need a draft by?

Thanks,

@Michael

What To Expect During The Editorial Process

  • You should receive a response within 24 hours Monday-Friday (will be slower on the weekend).

  • Your pitch might be declined, accepted, or flagged as needing more work. We will try our best to work with everyone on their pitches so we can get pieces published, but there will be cases where we think the pitch doesn't fit our editorial voice or the timing is off, so it will be declined.

  • If we accept your pitch, you'll need to send us a first draft. This must be in a Google Doc. Click here for an article template.

  • Editing will begin as a collaborative process. Ed team may leave comments on your draft. If this is the case, you'll need to address those in your second draft. The sooner you address those the more likely/sooner the piece can be published.

  • Once your final draft has been submitted, the editorial team may edit it further before publishing or save it to publish at a later time.

What Do You Think?

We're always excited to receive community pitches and eager to hear what the community thinks of the editorial site! Feel free to send us questions/feedback on the pitching process or articles themselves via email, PM, or in this thread.
