In wake of the recent Lupe incident, many people (including myself) were in an uproar when he announced that Drogas and Skulls will not be on Genius. His motive behind doing so was later explained in this tweet

https://twitter.com/LupeFiasco/status/763081565920333824

It doesn't seem that he has anything personal against Genius from what we can tell, but from his perspective, he believes that using a site that tells you the meaning behind lyrics is "cheating" in a way.

Lupe's music has not always been easy to decipher, but that's exactly what he wants his listeners to do. If certain artists decide they don't want their lyrics to be on Genius anymore, should they reserve the right to have them removed?

IMO

I personally don't believe that artists should be allowed to. Granted it is their lyrics, at the end of the day it's not like we're pirating their songs. And if the rumor about Genius being entirely funded by investors is true, then we don't make money off of their lyrics either, so really I don't see what the big deal is here.

And also fair use basically allows people to do this.

http://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/fair-use/what-is-fair-use/

In its most general sense, a fair use is any copying of copyrighted material done for a limited and "transformative" purpose, such as to comment upon, criticize, or parody a copyrighted work. Such uses can be done without permission from the copyright owner. In other words, fair use is a defense against a claim of copyright infringement. If your use qualifies as a fair use, then it would not be considered an illegal infringement.
