Hey everyone!

As some of you all may already know, the @genius-moderation team (staff, moderators, and mediators) have been using a 5 offense system to determine the appropriate length of suspension when placing a user in the "penalty box." In an effort to make Genius a better place for everyone, a "3 strike" system is being adopted for those who violate the Forum Guidelines. It will now take 3 violations of the guidelines for a user to be permanently suspended instead 5. The strikes will be as follows:

  • Initial warning with a message from a member of the moderation team and a link to the forum guidelines.
  • 1st strike: A 24-hour suspension
  • 2nd strike: A week long suspension
  • 3rd strike: Permanent suspension

Tbh it's more like a 4 strike system, but the warning won't count as a strike unless you mass downvote a user or spam NSFW images. Here are some questions you may have:

Do strikes ever go away?

Yes, if you have 1 strike it will reset in 3 months. If you have 2 it will reset in 6 months.

Is the permanent ban actually permanent?

Not necessarily. Every month the moderation team will exam who all has been permanently banned and determine if a user should be able to come back or not.

A week for a 2nd strike? That's a little harsh isn't it?

This is an effort to weed out users who have no interest in changing their ways. If you still can't follow our forum's guidelines after being warned and suspended for a day then you need to face a stiff punishment. You should also keep in mind that that is the last strike before a user gets permanently suspended. It needs to be taken seriously.

What if I've already been suspended recently?

Everyone who hasn't already been suspended for 3 days or more will start at 0. After your first offense you'll just get a warning.

Who do I go to if I feel I've been unfairly suspended?

Send me a message (@BasedGator) explaining the situation and I'll look into it. This system is out to be fair but firm. The moderation team is human, so mistakes will be made. We just don't want to keep giving chances to users who aren't interested in being good contributors to Genius.

This is a fairly harsh policy, but the moderation team feels it's a necessary step to really improve our forums. Feedback is very welcome, and if things aren't working then changes can be made. Feel free to sound off below or send me a message!
