Debate of the Day [#147]: In the case of his debut album, is it more accurate to say that Logic stole Kendrick’s GKMC concept, or was simply inspired by it?

In 2014, Logic release his highly anticipated debut album Under Pressure and although the album reached a fairly high level of critical acclaim by fans, it was no stranger to negative criticism either. Many people started to realize that there were some striking similarities between this album and Kendrick Lamar's very successful major label debut Good Kid, M.A.A.D City which influenced millions of people (including Logic himself).

Artists taking inspiration from other works of art and using it in their own is nothing new, however some people claim that Logic went a little too far.

Here are some of the similarities between Under Pressure and GKMC

http://gcmag.org/shocking-similarities-under-pressure-and-good-kid-m-a-a-d-city/

Listening to both albums, you may notice these themes:

  • A smart and (mostly) good kid in a rough urban environment
  • Preoccupied with pleasing his peers
  • Gang activity surrounds him
  • Gets involved with a girl who he has strong feelings for
  • Ultimately grows as a person, making the transition from a boy to a man by the end of the album

Logic even ends his album in a similar fashion, with a skit from an elder male perspective, followed by the concluding track.

Although Logic is telling his own semi-autobiographical story with this album, "Under Pressure" has too many similarities to "GKMC" to simply be deemed a coincidence.

The reviewer in that article claims that there are too many similarities for it to be considered a coincidence, but if you look at the backstory of a lot of other mainstream rappers, their stories are normally very similar as well (i.e, former drug dealer with an absent father who was living in poverty and is now successful thanks to music).

Whether Logic intended to or not, I do think there are some very obvious similarities between Under Pressure and GKMC, but I don't think they are similar enough to the point where can simply refer to the album as a knock-off project. There are still different things regarding most of the production lyricism that the two albums don't share in common, but what do you guys think?

Announcement

From now on, I am going to be making these threads between midnight and 1AM (EST) so that they are actually "debates of the day" and not just the debate of the last few hours of a day.

What does this mean you ask? It means expect another DOTD thread 4-5 hours from now.

See you there
