The Genius Update, October 2016

Over the last year or so the Genius community has become one of the most transparent communities on the internet. Today I wanted to take that one step further with this new monthly thread, The Genius Update. Here, I want to flesh out what we as a company, community team (@BasedGator, @epaulettes, @ewokABdevito, @streetlights, and myself), and tech team are focusing on in the coming month/months to come so we can all work together and everyone feels like we're on the same page!

Company

We want Genius to become the ultimate companion to music/source of musical knowledge. This includes lyrics, annotations, metadata, Q+A, articles, socials, etc. To make sure we achieve that goal, monetization is also on our radar at the moment. The more $$$ we make (see the Mafia 3 announcement!) the more cool shit we can build, and the better the website can be!

Community/Content

Improve lyric accuracy: It's no secret we're the fastest, but we can defs be more accurate. @streetlights has already started the Top Songs Lyric Accuracy Project and the Weekly Transcription Cleanup initiatives to get this off the ground with the transcriber community. We also just fixed a bug to make sure @transcribers are being properly notified of changes on song pages and re-did the credit system to make sure everyone gets credited and IQ, no matter how small the change. If you want to get involved in transcription, shoot @stree tlights a message and be sure to follow the @transcribers forum!

Highlight musical knowledge through the editorial site and social media: We recently started three new initiatives—How To Contribute To The Editorial Site, Fire Content Of The Week, and Weekly Social Media Highlights in @music to give y'all a platform to share your musical knowledge with the world. Email editorial@genius.com to pitch your articles and post in the Weekly Social Media thread OR the @genius-social-media forum to see your annotation shared o n Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Snapchat. S/o @Drew_Harvie, @Vesuvius, @Dyazz, @s_connoisseur, @Aenex, @DoyleOwl, @Empath, and @Gabbles who have already pitched/publish articles!

Build and support the Rock, Pop, and Musical communities: What's poppin'? Pop is! Hopefully you've seen @epaulettes in the trenches of Rock and Pop Genius. So far she's dropped the What's The Deal With This Pop Life? A Pop Genius State of the Union and two installments of What's Poppin.' There's more to come on the Pop side as well as similar iterations for the @rock-genius communty, so if you're down with Rock & Pop/love building communities, send @epaulettes a message!

Continue to bring more Editors, Mediators, and Moderators into the fold: We've got an army of eager contributors out there led by @ewokABdevito looking for the next @Theonlydjorkaeff to conquer Genius. If you're interested in becoming a coach/mentor, or you're a budding contributor looking to be an Editor, shoot @ewokABdevito a message and he'll match you with someone who has similar interests, taste in music, and timezone. As for Mediators and Moderators, send any Moderator or Staff member a message and we can help.

Weed out annotations that restate the line: We've already made one minor change you may have noticed (see below) but this is something the content team here at Genius will be really focused on this month. Some tips: use the "restates the line" button on annotations, be scrupulous Editors, and consult the @genius-editorial-board/@BasedGator if you're unsure if an annotation should exist.

Tech

Recent Updates: Some of the tech updates we've added recently include showing video content on song pages, enabling bracket movement on verified lyrics, adding the IQ slot machine effect sidwide, and building the iMessage lyric messages app for iOS10!

Upcoming updates: No dates on these, but these are just some of the changes we're looking to make soon: increase IQ for accepting annotations/suggestions, more metadata fields and permissions for contributors (editing album artwork!!), and bringing verified/sourced Q+A to everyone.

Feel free to drop thoughts/feedback in this thread. Was it helpful? Did you learn something or find something you're interested in? As for tech ideas/improvements or bug fixes, please post your idea in the relevant forum—Genius Ideas or Bugs.
