News Tips: Post Your Best Annotations/News Stories Here

As most of you have seen, Genius has started to venture into the world of reporting and writing on music news over the last few weeks. We met with @Michael and wanted to start a thread to get the community involved in this news endeavor and have you all in on the plan for news. And, since I haven't introduced myself, I'm Lauren—I'm running the news operation alongside @YoungJFK, our features editor. I previously ran news at Complex and briefly at Noisey before that.

How are we doing news?

We're trying to standout from the general rat race of news—we're not looking to be first but instead are focusing more on highlighting music knowledge—through what we find in annotations from community members, artists, producers, etc. or digging through aggregated content (interviews, essays, longform pieces on sites that aren't Genius).

What are some examples of good news posts?

Here are three examples of news posts that are a good representation of what we're doing:

Flipping annotations into news:

http://genius.com/a/kendrick-lamar-uses-a-unique-rhyme-pattern-on-schoolboy-qs-that-part-black-hippy-remix

This was an annotation on the site that no other outlet was talking about. Kendrick's unique rhyme pattern did so well on socials that flipping it into news was a no-brainer. Ideally, any outstanding tates like this can be flipped into news.

Aggregated news posts on music knowledge:

http://genius.com/a/who-is-the-cooing-baby-sampled-on-aaliyah-s-are-you-that-somebody

This is an example of aggregated news off of someone else's piece—but it must focus in on a tidbit of music knowledge. This is a well-known sample and this has always been a huge mystery to many music writers.

Finding the nugget of music knowledge no one else is talking about:

http://genius.com/a/kid-cudi-reveals-that-kanye-west-s-welcome-to-heartbreak-was-originally-a-jay-z-song

Everyone blogged the previews of the Cudi interview but we honed in on a little piece of news—s/o @Michael—which is the melody Cudi raps for a Jay Z song in the clip actually is Ye's "Welcome To Heartbreak." So, instead of just throwing up the whole interview, we hone in on the best piece of music knowledge in the clip.

How can you help?

This thread will serve as a rolling thread for you to dump news, news tips, great annotations, or anything that you think our audience and community would find newsworthy.

S/O @Theonlydjorkaeff for the Tates of the Week, too—if you find a good one throw it in here if you think it's newsworthy as well. There's so many amazing annotations on the site—this is how we can find them and highlight them in a news post, while shouting out and crediting the community member who created the tate or found the news.

How do you contact us outside of the thread?

You can always PM me on the site—any day, any time. And just as a reminder—tag social, Michael, me and JFK for eyes on any posts to the thread you think are newsworthy.

How do you think we can make news better?

Drop ideas in this thread and always feel free to let me/JFK/Michael know. Feedback is always appreciated.
