Another week, another roundup of all the things happening around the site related to musical theater! Over these past couple weeks, I definitely feel like there's been a core community coming together. Let's keep it up! And there's always room for more, right?
BROADWAY BID'NESS
- I declined to mention this last week because it was cringe, but this week, Bay Street Theatre cancelled a concert performance of Prince of Egypt after it caught flack for casting white leads. I mean, HONESTLY.
- Jason Robert Brown is working on a new musical, omg. It's called The Connector, btw.
- Baz Luhrmann seems like he's attempting to bankrupt Netflix with his new musical TV show about the birth of the hop hop movement.
- Avenue Q has changed its mad-lib lyric in "It's Only For Now" again. The line is now "Donald Trump is only for now." From those puppets's lips to God's ears.
COMMUNITY CENTER STAGE
It seems like the community page sprouts new people and annotations every time I check my notifications. Keep up the good work everybody, and shoutout to @lemoncave for helping to develop this directory. Remember, this page is a jumping off point! Let us all know what you're working on and what musicals you love so that everybody knows where we should direct our collective knowledge next.
Some users who deserve extra kudos this week! @cordyleome is cleaning up Aida and Book of Mormon, @DianneDurante shared some of her real world research on detailed Hamilton suggestions, @lemoncave is working on a ton of Sondheim shows including The Frogs, which I had honestly never heard of (exposing myself as a fake Sondheim fan??), @BadWolfBroadway and @reallydamaged are throwing down on Les Mis, @Nightospheric put some more editorial elbow grease into In The Heights, and @pinkpaladin added some nea t stuff on Hunchback of Notre Dame.
EXTRA EXTRA: I'm looking for community members to sign up to do some of these In Revue posts! PM me if you're interested! It's a blast! And you be granted the dubious honor of being able to choose your own
SIDE BY SIDE BY GENIUS
I was encouraged (enabled) by @lemoncave to pick this song to feature this week, so they're sharing the blame for whatever comes of this as we go INTO THE WOODS. For better or for worse, you know this song, and you know it deserves to be properly cleaned and annotated.

This song is LONG, and INTRICATE, and the transcription is still at basic functionality (if you want to tackle this, the character tags are still up on this duplicate page). However, these hurdles are also what makes the song so awesome. This song does double duty by being Into The Woods's opening number and many characters' "I Want" song. It introduces our seemingly familiar fairytale characters and lets them describe their desires and motivations in the play. It's also got unbelievable wordplay and fascinatingly odd composition choices—business as usual for a Sondheim musical. Lucky for some of you, if you're not familiar with the play a) there's a movie (go watch it! it's not bad!) and b) it's the show's first song! You don't need anything to play in this sandbox other than a vague familiarity with fairy tales. So come join @Freeus @TheMusicalShow @Rinster @Kaylin881 @wibblywobbly and play with us!
