Should theatrics be put above music?

Singers have been lip syncing for ages, from Milli Vanilli to Britney Spears it's been prevalent in the pop industry as long people can remember. A common excuse is that they must perform (dancing, performing stunts, and interacting with their audience) and that it makes up for the lack of actual singing. There of course are people who choose to use their natural voice but this can cause damage to their vocals over time and makes shows less entertaining for mainstream crowds.

Do you believe this is a valid excuse and that it's okay to lip sync when putting on a show?
